My Entire Critter Crew - Orginals Pastels

Dee Dee Murry, a most amazing, award winning, artist, and I have never met in person but we have "known" each other on line for probably 4-5 years now and I consider her a friend. She is the neatest person and has the most remarkable Dachshund, Hallie, who is the light of her life. You need to check out her website and blog and be prepared to be blown away!

Anyway, Dee Dee has mentioned she'd like to see me do a portrait of Sassy, my Cairn Terrier. I won't have time to do anything like that for a while with a big meeting at work coming up the end of the week running through the weekend. Then I have a large pencil commission to do :-) that will need to be finished by the end of May. So I thought I'd post the pastel that I've done of Sassy. Doing that means I had to give Samantha, my cat, her air time too. Then you all have seen the recent pastel I did of my horse Billy Bob. That is my entire critter crew. I plan on doing more pastels of each in the future - but for now here they are. I do have to say, Sassy is exactly what her name implies and this pastel doesn't show her true personality - I must do another one soon.

Do These Feathers Make My Butt Look Too Big? Original Pastel

Forgive me I couldn't resist the title! This is another reference from Wet Canvas and I love the photo I worked from. It tells a story in itself and those are always fun.
I used to have some Rhode Island Red hens and they had the fluffiest feathered butts. Each had their own personality and were just so much fun to watch. Doing this pastel reminded me of them. There are some days I think I would like to get some more chickens but then I think better of it. I listen to my neighbors roosters crow and enjoy them from afar.
My hens did produce some wonderful brown eggs though. . .

PS - Kitties Finished

I thought I'd add a post script on the kitties from last night's post - I hadn't put in the whiskers on the black and white one yet when I posted. It adds just a bit to his persona to have some whiskers! Then I had a few tweaks on the tabby but I think he is finished too. I have to add they both look better in person than on screen.

Two Kitties - Pastel Commission - WIP

I have been working on these two pastel commissions the last couple of evenings. I remembered to scan them a couple of times while I was working and thought I'd post them as a WIP. I still have some stuff to fix on each of them but decided I'd go ahead and post them as is.

They are 5" x 7" on velour. As you can see my initial drawing is just an outline drawing - I never go into much detail in the beginning. I always put the eyes in first - it gives me the creeps otherwise.

I enjoyed working on both of them but the tabby cat is my favorite and it was the one that I had the best photo to work from. White on white is harder and a flash was used on that reference photo so it flattened out everything and I'm uncertain I have the eye color correct - but I'm checking on that.

Proud Rooster - Original Pastel

Pastel on Velour

I love chickens and roosters. They are fascinating and fun to watch. There is something about their movements that are different from small birds. They come in such a variety of colors and types of feathers too - I think they are just unique birds.

I've been wanting to do another rooster lately and found a reference photo on Wet Canvas that I liked and decided to paint it. I was worried about the background on this one at first. I was afraid it was too busy. I was getting too detailed with it at first so I ended up turning it upside down to put in different shapes, darks and lights and then turned it right side up to put in the grasses - I think it worked.
