I love chickens and roosters. They are fascinating and fun to watch. There is something about their movements that are different from small birds. They come in such a variety of colors and types of feathers too - I think they are just unique birds.
I've been wanting to do another rooster lately and found a reference photo on Wet Canvas that I liked and decided to paint it. I was worried about the background on this one at first. I was afraid it was too busy. I was getting too detailed with it at first so I ended up turning it upside down to put in different shapes, darks and lights and then turned it right side up to put in the grasses - I think it worked.

I double that "it works" and raised an "Awesome" on this painting! I must try that velour format! I do that upside down thing to but only for shape, now you taught me I can do it for color and contrasts too! (*duh* on my part)
I absolutely love the way you captured that rooster "whatcha looking at" eye....
Hi Sheila - I'm glad you think the background works too ;-). I love velour I hope you try it.
This is really good, Karen - wonderful fresh colors and depth!! I love how you did the background too - not overpowering, but definitely not fading away - a part of the whole.
This is really nice, love the hint of blue in the grasses. Your pastels have such a distinctive soft style to them...the white feathers and tiny flowers, superb.
Regina thank you! You spurred me on to get something done. I'm glad you like the background.
Hi Marsha - thanks so much. I like the hint of blue too and I wanted to pull some of his color into the grasses. I appreciate your comments a lot!
Karen, your composition 'ROCKS' on this rooster. Very nice!
LOL - thanks Pattie! You made my day! I haven't been able to visit too many blogs lately but hope to catch up soon and see what you have been up to. Thanks again!
Karen - I love your Rooster! The color of the background adds to the whole piece. And you captured the shine of the feathers on the neck so well.
Hi Holly - thank you so much! I really enjoyed working on this one. I'm glad you stopped in.
