This red hen made me laugh. She looks like she is just a little bit startled and asks the question "Who's there?"
I had this scrap piece of 5"x7" velour and decided to paint this hen. It wasn't until I had her outlined and started putting in part of the dark on the background that I noticed the surface on the right side looked a little worse for the wear. I decided though to use it to my advantage. I don't know if the paper had gotten move around and scraped up or if my pinkie ring made marks on it while I working on it (which happens sometimes) but this looked worse than normal and I was having trouble covering up the marks. I really liked how the hen looked so far and really didn't want to toss it out - so I decided to make weeds and grasses. They aren't in your face but you can tell they are there and add a bit of texture to the painting I think - in more ways than one ;-) This is one of those happy accidents I think - it doesn't look too bad.

I love hens and rooster but it seems I tend to fall in love with anything you choose to render in your wonderful style. Thanks for visiting my blog, you're too kind. HUGS to a prolific and profound critter artist.

Hi Sheila! I have several roosters and hens in my kitchen - love them too. I'm glad you are enjoying my art - that is a good feeling anytime I hear that ;-)

This is a great painting, Karen! The texture on the right is quite a plus. Way to go!

This is wonderful Karen. Something about chickens and roosters just make you smile.

Hi Barbara. Thanks. There is something about ckickens that seem very prehistoric to me. When I had chickens for a short period of time I really enjoyed watching them but I have to admit I think they are odd birds.

You have chickens in your kitchen?? You are pure country. :)

This is a great painting. Great use of negative space. Maybe see you at the APS meeting tomorrow??Sunday?

LOL - Yes Jo I have chickens in my kitchen - convenient but the occasional feather in the food is annoying. No - no live chickens just paintings, a rug, cookie jar and the like. Thanks for the compliments though.

I won't be able to make the APS meeting tomorrow I'm waiting for Time Warner Cable to show up-grrr!
Making them believe I don't have phone or internet access when the wind blows is almost impossible! It really shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure something like that out but. . .oh well I won't get started on that now. Thanks again.
