Another challenge from Karin Jurick on her Different Strokes from Different Folks. I enjoy these challenges, however I didn't participate in the last one. I couldn't make myself do the Wall Street scene for some reason. Too stressful I think - thinking about all that is happening these days. This cow was much more relaxing to do - an escape if you will.

I've only done one other bovine, a longhorn in graphite. It is one of my early pieces in graphite. If you look closely somewhere on the steer there is the state of Texas, with Austin and some of the major highways.

Lone Star Pride
14" x 11" (35.6cm x 28.0cm)
Graphite on Fine Art Paper
$150 plus $10 shipping and handling in the US

Maybe I'll try the longhorn in pastel at some point - it would lend itself to pastels very nicely.

Karen awesome job on his face. What kind of paper are you using to do a combination of graphite and pastel? I love working on suede mat board with pastels but I don't think graphite would work on it.

Karen,
Wonderful job..I envy your ability with pastel. Just beautifully done, love the color choices...makes you want to reach out and touch this big guy. I like the composition, how he's looking right at you, as to say 'and now what?'. Well done.

By the way, your's is one of the few sites that the 'buy now' buttons actually look good on...color coordinated! Just out of curiosity, have they generated sales?

Keep up the good work..you just keep getting better and better.

Hi Toni - Thanks! Sorry for the confusion these two are done on different paper. The pastel is on velour and the graphite is on Strathmore 400 Series smooth. You are right neither would work well with the other. On the velour I am able to use CarbOthello pencils along with my Rembrandts and Contes, but graphite would damage the paper. The Strathmore that I use is very smooth - hardly any tooth so I don't think it would work well with pastels either. Two totally different mediums on two totally different papers :-)

Hey Marsha thanks so much. I love pastels more and more every day. I'm glad you like the cow - it does have that cow "look" LOL!

I was lucky in making my choice of color on my blog that the PayPal button goes really well with it. I'd like to say I did it on purpose but I didn't. Just lucky.

The PayPal button has been benifical but sales are slow these days.

Excellent job on the moo cow - and it's 5x7? Great detail, especially on a small piece - very life-like.
