I had fun working on this one! It only took a couple of hours to paint from start to finish and didn't give me much grief. I love it when that happens ;-)
Rembrandt has a great black pastel - it really has a dark rich look about it and covers really well especially considering this is on sand colored velour. I have to say too that I love velour paper - it holds so much pastel - really clings to it and that makes it really nice when working with such dark colors. There isn't any dust to speak of. Of course my fingers get dirty but there isn't a lot of dust floating around to worry about. That means I can sit on my love seat, a drawing board propped up in my lap with a pillow, my feet on an ottoman and relax after working all day and paint to my heart's content. I also scan my originals so that I can make giclee prints. That requires me to lay my original right side down on the scanner and I don't use a fixative. It does leave a bit of dust on the glass but is easily cleaned with a glass cleaner and soft cloth and the original really isn't affected. If you are a pastel artist you really should try velour if you haven't already.
I really hope this looks as good on your computer screen as it does in real life.

Hosea 10:12 (New International Version)
Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and showers righteousness on you.

Oh, Karen, it's a delight to read your post.... that's painting with style!
And I can see it on the final piece. I'm so glad you shared your process :)
Best regards,
Carolina

Wow - that black really did cover up that sand colored velour surface. I LOVE velour, and have used it a bunch lately...only when I frame it, it DOES dust a bunch, so I have had to submit to ever-so-lightly fixing...I don't like to, but all the transporting I do, I just have no other choice. This one is beautiful, Karen!

Thanks Carolina - you're a sweetheart!

Hey Patti - Occaionally I have that problem but still haven't fixed any of them. I ship a lot internationally. I don't frame those though. Just put a piece of that parchment paper on top and roll it up. Ships great that way.
Lesley Harrison never mattes or uses fixative. She buys the museum glass and mount her pastels directly next to the glass. I have her on my blog roll - check out her framing techniques there. I've tried it and it looks great.

Thank you Susanna - so nice to have you drop in.

Greenglass clean - thank you and thanks for stopping in too.
